Government has awarded Vodacom telecommunication a licence to
operate in Zambia as a fourth mobile service provider.
the license was given to Vodacom late last month
after government announced that it was considering reversing the decision of
not bringing a fourth mobile provider on board.
Vodacom is a
pan-African mobile
telecommunications company, and was the number-one cellular network in South Africa.
It provides GSM service to more than 35 million customers in South
Africa, Tanzania,
Lesotho,
Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Chief government spokesperson Kennedy
sakeni who could neither confirm nor deny the development says government wants
to bring competition in the telecommunications industry so that customers can
benefits from good service provision by the players.
Mr. Sakeni who is information and
broadcasting service minister says government will welcome any company that
wishes to come and invest in the country’s telecommunication sector.
He says currently Zambians are not
impressed with the services being providers by the players in the industry and
bringing a fourth mobile service provider will enhance competition.
