mopani copper mines to commission its acid plant in december 2013

Mopani Copper Mines has indicated that the third convertor and second acid plant at mufulira mines on the Copperbelt are expected to be commissioned in December 2013 and will mark the completion of the smelter upgrade project.
According to a press statement made available to radio phoenix, Announcing the arrival of the second convertor Mopani chief executive officer Danny callow says once completed the project will result in over 97percent capture of the sulphur dioxide from the smelter.
Mr. callow adds that Phase 1, completed in 2006 reduced the emissions to approximately 50percent capture, compared to 0percent sulphur dioxide capture at all for decades before privatization
The Mopani copper mines chief executive officer says as an investor it is concerned about the sulphur dioxide that has been released into the atmosphere for decades but it is determined to stop it forever and this will be completed of next year, 18 months ahead of the original schedule.
He has explained that In February 2012 Mopani completed the installation of the first convertor in the series of three converters to be installed under the third and final phase of the Smelter Upgrade Project.
Mr. callow says the arrival of the second convertor is a huge milestone in the $140 million third and Final Phase of the Smelter Upgrade Project which commenced in 2010.
He says the second convertor is expected to be commissioned in late 2012 after which installation of the third and final Converter will commence immediately
