ZAMBIAN BANKS CHALLENGED TO BE ACCOUNTABLE AND PROTECT THE INTERESTS OF THEIR DEPOSITORS TO AVOID MONETARY LOSS AND CONFIDENCE FROM THE CUSTOMERS THROUGH GOOD COOPERATE GOVERNANCE PROGRAM

BANK OF ZAMBIA GOVERNOR DR CALEB FUNDANGA HAS CHALLENGED BANKS IN THE COUNTRY TO BE ACCOUNTABLE AND PROTECT THE INTERESTS OF THEIR DEPOSITORS TO AVOID MONETARY LOSS AND CONFIDENCE FROM THE CUSTOMERS THROUGH GOOD COOPERATE GOVERNANCE PROGRAM.
SPEAKING TODAY AT THE INSTITUTE OF DIRECTORS BUSINESS LUNCHEON ON CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND ITS IMPACT ON FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS DR FUNDANGA POINTED OUT THAT POOR COOPERATE GOVERNANCE MAY CONTRIBUTE TO BANKS FAILURE, WHICH IN TURN CAN POSE SIGNIFICANT COSTS ON THE TREASURY AND CAN HAVE OTHER MACRO ECONOMIC EFFECTS LIKE CONTAGION RISKS.
DR FUNDANGA STRESSED THAT POOR COOPERATE GOVERNANCE CAN ALSO LEAD TO FINANCIAL MARKETS TO LOSE CONFIDENCE IN THE ABILITY OF THE BANKS TO PROPERLY MANAGE THEIR ASSETS AND LIABILITIES, INCLUDING CUSTOMER DEPOSITS AND THIS COULD IN TURN TRIGGER A RUN ON A BANK OR PRECIPITATE LIQUIDITY CRISIS.
HE STATED THAT IT IS FOR THIS REASON THAT MANAGEMENT OF BANKS HAVE TO PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE INTEREST OF DEPOSITORS AND OTHER CREDITORS BECAUSE THE CONSEQUENCES OF MISMANAGING THEIR RISKS CAN THEREFORE BE VERY SEVERE NOT ONLY FOR THE INDIVIDUAL BANK ALSO FOR THE SYSTEM AS A WHOLE.
AND THE GOVERNOR CALLED ON THE BANKS TO PUT IN PLACE A SOUND PAYMENT SYSTEM AS IT PROVIDES THE MEANS BY WHICH VAST NUMBERS OF TRANSACTION ARE MADE EACH DAY.
HE NOTED THAT THE PAYMENT SYSTEM INVOLVES MANY DIFFERENT COMPONENTS, INCLUDING SYSTEM FOR SETTLING LARGE, INTER –BANK AND INTER-COOPERATE PAYMENT TRANSACTION AND SYSTEMS FOR HANDLING A NUMBER OF SMALLER TRANSACTIONS.
DR FUNDANGA SAID THAT A MAJOR OPERATIONAL FAILURE IN THE PAYMENT SYSTEM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE SEVERE DISRUPTION TO THE FINANCIAL SYSTEM AND WIDER ECONOMY

ALBIDON LIMITED EXPECTS ITS REACTIVATED MUNALI NICKEL MINE IN THE COUNTRY TO PRODUCE 50,000 TONNES OF NICKEL IN CONCENTRATE THIS YEAR

ALBIDON LIMITED EXPECTS ITS REACTIVATED MUNALI NICKEL MINE IN THE COUNTRY TO PRODUCE 50,000 TONNES OF NICKEL IN CONCENTRATE THIS YEAR, WHICH WILL BE SOLD AT PREVAILING SPOT PRICES TO CHINESE METALS REFINER JINCHUAN GROUP.
AT THAT LEVEL, THE MINE WOULD BE THE FIRST OF ITS SIZE TO RESUME OPERATIONS SINCE SEVERAL MINES FROM AUSTRALIA TO THE EUROPE WERE MOTHBALLED INDEFINITELY WHEN WORLD NICKEL PRICES DIVED IN 2008.
IT ALSO REPRESENTS THE EQUIVALENT OF NEARLY THE ENTIRE FORECAST 2011 GLOBAL NICKEL SUPPLY DEFICIT OF 60,000 TONNES FORECAST BY THE INTERNATIONAL NICKEL STUDY GROUP.
JINCHUAN IS NOW LOOKING TO HELP EXPAND PRODUCTION BEYOND 50,000 TONNES OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS, WITH A FOCUS ON AFRICA AND AUSTRALIA, ALBIDON CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER DAVID ROUND SAID.
JINCHUAN OWNS 49.9 PER CENT OF ALBIDON, WITH AN OPTION TO ACQUIRE UP TO 74 PER CENT AND PRODUCTION FROM THE ALBIDON MINE WAS HALTED IN MID-2008 AFTER A DRAMATIC FALL IN PRICES, LEAVING OPERATING COSTS HIGHER THAN WHAT ALBIDON COULD SELL ITS NICKEL FOR.
NICKEL PRICES DOUBLED BETWEEN APRIL 2009 AND APRIL 2010 AND HAVE REMAINED RELATIVELY STABLE EVER SINCE AT AROUND $US25, 000 TO $US26, 000 A TONNE.
AT THE TIME PRICES CRASHED, JINCHUAN, WHICH HOLDS INTERESTS IN OTHER AUSTRALIA-BASED NICKEL MINERS, INCLUDING WESTERN AREAS, PANORAMIC RESOURCES AN THE MMG DIVISION OF MIN-METALS RESOURCES, ONLY HELD ABOUT FOUR PER CENT OF ALBIDON.
JINCHUAN LIFTED ITS STAKE AFTER HELPING PAY OFF MONEY OWED TO BARCLAYS CAPITAL, RETAINING RIGHTS TO BUY 100 PER CENT OF MINE PRODUCTION IN CONCENTRATE FORM AT PREVAILING LONDON METAL EXCHANGE SPOT PRICES, ACCORDING TO ROUND.
THE MINE MANAGEMENT SAID IT HAD RECEIVED INDICATIONS FROM JINCHUAN THAT THE COMPANY HELD NO DESIGNS ON ACQUIRING ALBIDON OUTRIGHT, DESPITE HOLDING CONVERTIBLE NOTES, WHICH IF EXERCISED COULD DELIVER THE CHINESE FIRM A FURTHER 310 MILLION SHARES AND LIFT ITS STALE TO 74 PER CENT.
ANOTHER ZAMBIAN MINING COMPANY WITH AN AUSTRALIAN OWNER, EQUINOX MINERALS HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF TWO RECENT TAKEOVER ATTEMPTS. THE SECOND, BY MIN-METALS AND WORTH $US6.3 BILLION, REMAINS ACTIVE.
JINCHUAN HAS PLEDGED ITS SUPPORT FOR ALBIDON'S GROWTH STRATEGY AND TO MAINTAIN ITS CURRENT STAKE IN A MEETING WITH JINCHUAN'S CHAIRMAN IN HONG KONG IN MARCH.
CLOSE ON THE HEELS OF THE REACTIVATION OF THE MUNALI MINE, CANADA'S FIRST QUANTUM MINERALS IS SPENDING ABOUT $US190 MILLION TO BRING THE RAVENSTHORPE NICKEL MINE IN AUSTRALIA BACK INTO PRODUCTION BY MAY 2011 AT A RATE OF 39,000 TONNES,
ALSO, TWO NEW FERRO NICKEL OPERATIONS, VALE'S ONCA PUMA AND ANGLO-AMERICAN'S BARRO ALTO, BOTH IN BRAZIL ARE SCHEDULED TO START UP. BETWEEN THEM THEY WILL PRODUCE AROUND 90,000 TONNES PER YEAR OF CONTAINED NICKEL ONCE IN FULL PRODUCTION

ZAMBIA CONGRESS OF TRADE UNION GENERAL SECRETARY ROY MWABA SAYS THE RACE TO STATE HOUSE IS LIKELY TO SEE A TOUGH BATTLE BETWEEN THE RULING MMD PARTY AND THE PF BUT THERE COULD BE A SURPRISE UPSET FROM THEIR UPND COUNTERPARTS THAT HAVE STRONG BASE IN SOUTHERN PROVINCE.
MR. MWABA SAYS THE ROAD TO STATE HOUSE IS WIDE AND THIS IS CASTING DOUBT AND UNCERTAINTY ON THE OUTCOME BUT A POLITICAL PARTY WITH MEMBERS WHO WILL BE ISSUE BASED IN THEIR CAMPAIGNS ARE LIKELY TO RECEIVE MORE VOTES AS PEOPLE ARE TIRED OF MUDSLINGING AND BEING HOODWINKED ALL THE TIME.

ZAMBIAN UNITED STATES BASED ORTHODOX BISHOP EDWARD CHOMBA HAS OBSERVED THAT DECEPTIVE LEADERSHIP EMANATING FROM LEADERS HAS PUT THE COUNTRY IN THE SITUATION OF HIGH POVERTY LEVELS

ZAMBIAN UNITED STATES BASED ORTHODOX BISHOP EDWARD CHOMBA HAS OBSERVED THAT DECEPTIVE LEADERSHIP EMANATING FROM LEADERS HAS PUT THE COUNTRY IN THE SITUATION OF HIGH POVERTY LEVELS AS MOST OF THEM ARE VERY GREED.
SPEAKING ON RADIO PHOENIX’S LET THE PEOPLE TALK PROGRAMME BISHOP CHOMBA HAS ALSO STATED THAT CHANGE IS INEVITABLE AND PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE NOSTALGIC ABOUT CHANGE IN THE COUNTRY BECAUSE BEEN STUCK IN THE SITUATION WILL NOT IMPROVE THE ECONOMY.
BISHOP CHOMBA HAS CHARGED THAT LACK OF VISION BY THE LEADERS HAS RESULTED IN THE COUNTRY NOT PROGRESSING ACCORDING BECAUSE EVEN THE MUCH TALKED ABOUT 6.3PERCENT ECONOMIC GROWTH IS NOTHING AS MOST PEOPLE ARE STILL SUFFERING LIVING WITH NOTHING IN THEIR HOMES.
AND BISHOP CHOMBA HAS FURTHER SUGGESTED THAT ZAMBIA SHOULD NOT BE A CHRISTIAN NATION BECAUSE IT HAS LOST THE VALUES OF CHRISTIANITY AS IT CAN BE SEEN FROM THE VIOLENCE ERUPTING FROM TIME TO TIME AND THE KILLING OF INNOCENT PEOPLE.
HE SAYS HE ZAMBIA BECOMES A CHRISTIAN NATION IT WILL CEASE TO BE A DEMOCRACY BUT WILL INSTEAD BECOME A THEOCRACY WERE CHRISTIANS VALUES ARE EMBRACED AND PEOPLE LIVE EQUALLY BASED OF THE TEACHING AND PRINCIPLE OF THE BIBLE.
MEANWHILE SECOND REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT DR FREDRICK CHILUBA HAS CHARGED THAT BISHOP CHOMBA IS NOT THE RIGHT PERSON TO TALK ABOUT CHRISTIAN VALUES AND THE DECLARATION OF ZAMBIA AS A CHRISTIAN NATION.
SPEAKING THROUGH  HIS SPOKESPERSON EMMANUEL MWAMBA, DR CHILUBA SAYS BISHOP CHOMBA’S REMARKS ON THE DECLARATION OF ZAMBIA AS A CHRISTIAN NATION AND ON HIS CALLS FOR CHANGE SHOULD BE IGNORED BY ZAMBIANS BECAUSE HE WAS EX-COMMUNICATED IN 2007 BY ARCHBISHOP TIMOTHY PAUL BAYMON OF THE USA.
HE HAS FURTHER CHARGED THAT THE CHURCH SHOULD  NOT ALLOW INDIVIDUALS SUCH AS MR. CHOMBA TO MASQUERADE AS MEMBERS OF THE CLERGY IN ZAMBIA.
AND  THE CHRISTIAN COALITION  HAS EXPRESSED DISAPPOINTMENT AT THE SENTIMENTS OF THE  BISHOP BY STATING THE ZAMBIANS MUST NOT ALLOW SUCH A SITUATION.
SPEAKING IN AN INTERVIEW WITH RADIO PHOENIX CHRISTIAN COALITION OF ZAMBIA PRESIDENT BISHOP GODWIN MUSONDA WHO WAS FLANKED BY CORNERSTONE WORSHIP CLERGY CHOMBELA HAS POINTED OUT THAT PEOPLE LIKE BISHOP CHOMBA MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO EVEN TALK ABOUT ZAMBIA’S DECLARATION AS A CHRISTIAN NATION BECAUSE THEY SEEM NOT TO UNDERSTAND THE MATTER.

THE ZAMBIA NATIONAL FARMERS UNION HAS ADVISED THE PRIVATE SECTOR TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE COUNTRY’S B-PLUS RATING BY EXPLORING EXTERNAL BORROWING AT LOWER COSTS

THE ZAMBIA NATIONAL FARMERS UNION HAS ADVISED THE PRIVATE SECTOR TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE COUNTRY’S B-PLUS RATING BY EXPLORING EXTERNAL BORROWING AT LOWER COSTS WHICH WILL CREATE AN IMPETUS FOR DOMESTIC LENDING INSTITUTIONS TO REDUCE DOMESTIC INTEREST RATES.
ACCORDING TO A PRESS STATEMENT MADE AVAILABLE TO RADIO PHOENIX TODAY ZNFU PRESIDENT JARVIS ZIMBA HAS NOTED THAT COUNTRIES THAT ARE NOT RATED ARE OFTEN DEEMED RISKIER THAN THOSE WITH A CREDIT RATING WHICH LEADS TO HIGHER INTEREST RATES ON LOANS AND OTHER DEBT INSTRUMENTS OBTAINED EXTERNALLY.
MR. ZIMBA ADDS THAT IN SUCH A SITUATION, INVESTORS INTENDING TO LEND MONEY TO GOVERNMENT OR THE PRIVATE SECTOR REGULARLY USE CREDIT RATING TO EVALUATE WHETHER THE MONEY OWED TO THEM CAN BE REPAID WITHIN THE SCHEDULED OR SPECIFIC PERIOD.
HE HAS STRESSED THAT OBTAINING THE CREDIT RATING WILL HELP REDUCE THE COUNTRY’S BORROWING COSTS ON FUNDS MUCH NEEDED FOR INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR ALSO STANDS TO GAIN BECAUSE THE RATING WOULD PROVIDE THEM WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACCESS LONG TERM FINANCE AT REDUCED COST.
MR. ZIMBA HAS POINTED OUT THAT THE RATING PITS ZAMBIA AS ONE OF THE LESS RISKY INVESTMENT DESTINATION AND PUTS THE COUNTRY IN GOOD STANDING WITH INSTITUTIONAL INVESTORS WHICH BROADENS ZAMBIA’S CAPABILITY TO ACCESS GLOBAL CAPITAL MARKETS.
THE UNION HAS URGED THE GOVERNMENT TO CONTINUE TO IMPROVE ON PUBLIC POLICY MANAGEMENT SO THAT A CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR DOING BUSINESS CONTINUES TO IMPROVE TO PRESERVED THE CURRENT RATING AND ATTAIN AN UPPER BAND CREDIT RATING SUCH AS TRIPPLE A.
